The biggest part of this project so far has been developing a two-act musical called If the Creek Don't Rise. That play commemorates the building of the National Road, the Dayton Flood, the Wright Brothers' experiments, and many other important historical events and trends of the modern Midwest. It also celebrates the music of twelve generations of explorers, pioneers, builders, and inventors who built the heart and backbone of the nation. Other planned projects include: Providing live performances of the music of the Heartland, featuring soloists and ensembles Providing information about the music of the Heartland. Our goal is to include downloadable sheet music, MIDI, and mp3 files of songs that have been important to regional history. Providing information and links to information about regional history, especially the history of the National Road corridor. In the immortal words of Joni Mitchell, "Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you got 'till it's gone." Not that the American Midwest is Paradise, but it is more than a place that folks on either coast have to fly over to get to the other coast. And we want to document and celebrate the things that have made this place different from any other place, while there are still folks who know the difference. At the moment, Creek Don't Rise™ is operating as a part of Breakthrough Communications™, the communication company started by writer and musician Paul Race in 1995. We are not a non-profit agency, although Paul and other individuals affiliated with Creek Don't Rise™ have worked with non-profit regional educational, musical, and theatrical agencies for many years. We may spin off all or part of this effort into a non-profit corporation, however, if there is enough interest.
