Tony Trischka occasionally does information videos for Deering. Here he is describing how to pick the melody in a way that it doesn't get obscured by all the extra notes.

That said, one of the easiest ways to improve your banjo tone without practicing is to buy a better banjo and sell your old one. Seriously. You can LEARN on a cheapie, and I keep cheapies around for trips to the beach, but adding a tone ring, for example, will change things dramatically. :-)
