Post subject:  Six-string backless

One of the hardest parts of playing a 6-string banjo in folk-style arrangements is that the strings ring so long on tone-ring, resonator equipped banjos. I can't take the resonator off of my Backwoods 6 (or of many other brands) because the aluminum flange's points turn it into a deadly weapon. So I tried a 6-string cheapie with a wooden pot - a Rogue.

I got it used from a guitar player who had it set up nicely. Let me point out that when they come out of the box, these are basically unplayable, but they're not hard to set up. http://www.creekdontrise.com/acoustic/s ... ing_up.htm

I've discovered that, with the resonator off, I could use my regular flatpicking and strumming patterns without creating the muddle of sound that I get when I use those patterns on my Backwoods 6. This configuration would allow an acoustic guitar player the ability to add banjo tonality to an acoustic song without having to learn an entirely different technique.

On hard-core folk-revival-era songs like Stookey's "Early in the Morning," it sounds great.

The only problem for me is that the neck is very narrow, so when I'm doing my more complex fingerpicking patterns, the fingers of my left hand keep deadening the open strings. :-(

So, ideally, for me a, a Backwoods 6 neck with a Rogue pot? In the meantime, I'll hang on to it, though.
