Post subject: | Question about USA-Made Dulcimers in General |
A reader writes: Are most or all domestic made dulcimers quality instruments? I am thinking of buying one but am totally new them. Thank you. -------------------------------- I apologize, but I have to say that MANY domestic-made dulcimers and even more Asian-built dulcimers are barely musical instruments, if at all. There was a flurry of people building their own dulcimers in the 1960s and 1970s, and many of them were barely playable, nor were they solid enough to remain playable until today. Plus, there are many brands that are advertised as USA companies, but the instruments or at least their parts are just built in Asia. Sorry, that's not what you wanted to hear. In my various pursuits, I HAVE come across many American-built dulcimers that were well built and sound good. But most of them are from people who only every built a handful of the things, so I can't recommend any brand except McSpadden, whose quality is consistent. I mapquested your town and realize you're pretty far from anyone who is likely to have a good dulcimer in stock to try out. If you wind up shopping used online, look for evidence of craftsmanship and evidence of a solid face. If you see something on the internet that you think might be suitable, e-mail me the link and I'll take a look. I can't guarantee long-distance that it will be as advertised, but at least I might be able to steer you away from bad ones. Good luck - Paul |
