Post subject:  Removing pegs for refinishing

A reader writes:

I need to refinish an OS 21C [100 year anniversary mode.]. If I remove the existing tuning pegs, can I re-install them without worry? Do I need to replace them with new ones? An, the same question for the bridge pins. And/or, what is a good online source for this kind of information?

I'll be honest, I've never done this. WHATEVER you do, unwind the tuning pegs to loosen the string tension all the way - don't just cut the strings. Most writers act as if you can simply pull the pegs out afterwards and stick (or tap) them back in when you're ready.

You might consider buying a cheap autoharp like this one: https://www.shopgoodwill.com/Item/71059240
and working on it first, to get a feel for the thing. That's how most "serious" repair people start.

Sorry I can't be more specific.

Best of luck - Paul
