Do you know where I can buy nylon strings for a 17 fret tenor banjo?

Not offhand but I can check around. What tuning are you interested in. Also, do you know the scale length, the distance from the nut to the bridge?

The reader replies:

Thanks for the reply. The tuning is CGDA and the distance from the nut to the bridge is 20 1/4." I have nylon strings on it now but the A string broke. This is an old tenor banjo with no identification on it except for an inlaid white star by the tuning pegs.

Were the rest of the strings wound?

The reader replies:

No, only the 4th (C) string is wound.

Odd that only one string was wound. Checking around, the best I can figure is that you might try a set made for half-size guitar. Something like d'Addario ej27n. You might start out using the middle 4 strings to be on the safe side, though I think you may find them a little too loose that way for your liking. I might try using the lowest 4 strings if i thought the neck could handle it. The tone would be better. Either way would give you a baseline for further experimentation. By the way, you'll have to tie the ends manually. They don't come with loops. And buying a set will usually be cheaper than buying individual strings while you're experimenting at first. Hope this helps.- Paul
